Iron Bisglycinate

About Iron Bisglycinate

A well-absorbed form of a blood-building mineral*

Iron Bisglycinate provides an optimal way to supplement iron, a mineral that is needed by the body to make new red blood cells and for carrying oxygen throughout the body.* Having a sufficient amount of iron in the body is especially important for women of childbearing age and athletes.*

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has determined that iron deficiency is greatest among toddlers, menstruating adolescents, and adult females. An iron deficiency can manifest as muscle weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath on exertion, dizziness, tinnitus, spots before the eyes, drowsiness, irritability, infrequent menstruation, and loss of libido. Athletes need approximately 1.5 times as much iron as non-athletes. Individuals who follow a vegetarian or lower protein diet can have twice the need for dietary iron because the iron content in vegetables is primarily in the form of non-heme iron, a form that is not well absorbed. Blood loss from injury or muscle damage, as well as GI bleeding associated with extreme endurance activities, further increases need for supplemental iron.

The Thorne Difference

Conventional iron supplementation, which includes forms such as ferrous sulfate, can cause gastrointestinal side effects – including nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and dark-colored stools – because most conventional forms of iron are poorly absorbed. Thorne's Iron Bisglycinate (Ferrochel®) is a patented chelated form of iron. This form of iron is reacted with glycine, resulting in optimal absorption in the gastrointestinal tract and decreasing iron’s typical gastrointestinal side effects.* A study (cited below) showed Ferrochel is more effective at increasing iron levels in pregnant women than ferrous sulfate – and at a lower dose with fewer side effects.*
