Why we need
magnesium

The mineral magnesium is crucial for the body to function properly because magnesium is involved in more than 600 of the body's enzymatic reactions. When these reactions occur normally, it results in numerous benefits for:

Muscle relaxation* • Blood sugar levels* • Insulin sensitivity*

Nerve function* • Managing stress* • Restful sleep*

Cellular energy production* • Blood vessel relaxation*

Blood pressure* • Heart muscle function*

Bone support* • Kidney support*

Are you at risk for magnesium deficiency?

Because blood testing for a magnesium deficiency can be difficult and expensive, it's important to identify those individuals or groups who are at most risk.

Diabetics or individuals with other blood sugar abnormalities, such as insulin resistance.

Individuals who consume a diet high in pastries and other junk foods - which are basically devoid of magnesium.

Individuals who take medications that increase urinary magnesium lossstrong> - such as thiazide diuretics for blood pressure (of particular importance in this population because magnesium helps maintain healthy blood pressure levels*).

Individuals who are on long-term antibiotic use, because antibiotics can combine with magnesium and form insoluble compounds the body can't absorb.

Alcoholics because of poor nutritional status, chronic GI problems, and increased urinary loss.

Elderly individuals because of poor absorption, chronic disease, and long-term medication use.

How do I know if I'm deficient in magnesium?

Many U.S. adults are deficient.

According to World Health Organization statistics, as much as 75% of the U.S. adult population does not meet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Recommended Daily Intake of 420 mg.1

Because of magnesium's many affects on the body, a deficiency will often result in a variety of symptoms - or sometimes no symptoms at all!

On the other hand, magnesium deficiency can manifest in many ways, such as blood sugar metabolism, muscle cramps or soreness, eyelid twitching, fatigue, and poor sleep.

Easily - and optimally - absorbed.

Thorne's magnesium supplements contain the forms of magnesium that have demonstrated superior absorption compared to magnesium oxide, commonly used in inferior magnesium products.

serum magnesium levels

Magnesium Bisglycinate

A well-tolerated, lightly sweetened powder. It promotes restful sleep and relaxes smooth and skeletal muscles.*

Formulated for optimal absorption

A crossover study found that serum levels of magnesium over eight hours were highest for magnesium bisglycinate, followed by dimagnesium malate, magnesium citrate, and magnesium oxide.*

The glycine in this ingredient enhances its solubility and absorption by decreasing the pH of the intestines.* The glycine that takes up space on the magnesium molecule also decreases the propensity of the magnesium to complex with plant-based phytates that would otherwise interfere with its absorption.*

Reduces magnesium's laxative effect

The glycine-magnesium molecular structure reduces the laxative effect typically seen in magnesium supplements.*

NSF Certified for Sport®

Because an athlete needs to know that his or her supplements are trustworthy and compliant, every batch of an NSF Certified for Sport® product is tested for compliance with label claims and to ensure the absence of more than 200 substances banned by many major athletic organizations, such as stimulants, narcotics, steroids, diuretics, beta-2 agonists, and masking agents.

Magnesium CitraMate

A well-absorbed form of magnesium that supports the heart and skeletal muscles.*

Relieves muscle tenderness and fatigue*

A study of 24 individuals found that taking malic acid and 300 mg of magnesium twice daily, provided significant benefit in measurements of muscle tenderness, fatigue, and discomfort.*

Promotes Krebs Cycle function*

Citrate and malate chelates enhance the functioning of the Krebs Cycle, which results in increased cellular energy production.*

Supports kidney function*

Both magnesium and citrate support kidney function by decreasing calcium oxalate and phosphate in the urine.*

Calcium-Magnesium Malate

Calcium and magnesium bound to malate provide a higher amount of these two elemental minerals per capsule than other combinations (such as citrate) - for healthy bones, heart, and muscles.*

Magnesium paired with calcium

Anthropologists believe that current calcium intake is one-fourth to one-third of what humans consumed 10,000 years ago. Supplementing with the well-absorbed calcium malate found in Thorne's Calcium-Magnesium Malate promotes healthy bones.*

Working Together

Magnesium and calcium work synergistically in the body, with both helping to maintain normal blood pressure, optimal muscle contraction, and support for painful menstruation.* And magnesium helps keep calcium in the bones and out of the soft tissues like blood vessels and kidneys, where it isn't helpful.*

A good ratio

The appropriate intake ratio of calcium to magnesium is undecided, with some authors in the scientific literature supporting a 2:1 ratio (twice as much calcium as magnesium), while others recommend a 1:1 ratio. Calcium-Magnesium Malate provides a 1:1 ratio.

Cal-Mag Citrate Effervescent Powder

An easy-to-consume calcium and magnesium supplement in an optimally absorbed form.*

Helps maintain normal bone and muscle health*

A recent analysis of a large number of previously conducted research studies on calcium and bone mass found that daily supplementation of 500 mg to 1,500 mg of a well-absorbed form of calcium can promote an increase in bone mass in adolescents, young adults, older men, and post-menopausal women.*

Enhances immune function*

The addition of vitamin C enhances immune function and promotes healthy connective tissues.*

"No more leg cramps. Good taste. I also like that it's lightly carbonated."

Angela K. • Cal-Mag Citrate

"Love it. The product is excellent."

Christine W. • Magnesium CitraMate

"I have tried other brands and have to say this is the best. I love the powder formula vs a capsule. It dissolves nicely in water and the taste is decent compared to other powders! I have been magnesium deficient for years and this product makes it easy to add half doses to the serving vs. trying to pry open a capsule to get half the amount."
