About

I am not a doctor or a dietician. I am a living experiment that began over forty years ago. I was conducting research on healthy aging for a preretirement planning series I was writing. The average life expectancy was 75 for men but I learned of work being done by Dr. Roy Walford at UCLA who determined that under ideal circumstances the life potential for a human being was 120-140 years. Is that possible? Yes, but at the moment highly improbable. As Dr. Walford himself learned, our environment has an impact on not only the length of a lifespan but also one’s ability to enjoy it. Dr. Walford, who died at the age of 79 from ALS ultimately succumbed to the effects of oxygen deprivation he experienced while a participant in Biosphere Two. The problem with Dr. Walford’s longevity projection is that it was tied to a very low-calorie diet that would rob most of us of our enjoyment from eating. As a life-long competitive athlete I understand that living well is more important than how long. What if we could get more life out of the years we have? That means being strong, capable and energetic. Sadly, that isn’t the case for most older Americans. A lifetime of improper nutrition choices and a sedentary lifestyle have left them handicapped. Choices, not unruly diseases or injuries are at the root of most of America’s health problems and enormous expense. But everyone knows this. All of the information is available, just ask Siri. The problem is getting worse, not better. Why? There are dozens of sources for advice about diet and exercise and many of them do very well financially without moving the needle on the problem. I guess if they worked they’d all be out of business. So, what can I do? I can speak from experience that they do not have. I know the joy of having learned so much from longevity and having the physical stamina to continue to do the things I did in my thirties. Everyday is a gift when you feel great. My podcasts and weekly emails will help create the mindset and habits to move participants along the journey to feeling more energetic and optimistic. And the best part is that you needn’t sacrifice anything. You’ll just be opting for a better choice. A more mindful choice.
