About Silybin Phytosome

Milk thistle-phospholipid complex for superior absorption

Milk thistle contains multiple constituents with strong antioxidant activity that protect liver cells from free radical damage, strengthen liver cell membranes, and help maintain the liver's built-in antioxidant system by enhancing the liver’s production of glutathione and superoxide dismutase (SOD).* Delivery in a phytosome format allows for superior absorption compared to conventional milk thistle products.

The Thorne Difference

Siliphos® from Indena, the developers of phytosome technology, is a patented form of the milk thistle flavonoid silybin that is bound to phospholipids for superior absorption. The combination provides the liver-supportive benefits of silybin and phosphatidylcholine in one compound.* Silybin, the most active and potent flavonoid in the silymarin complex, is naturally water soluble, but it is made lipid-friendly by being complexed with phospholipids. The result is that, in addition to superior absorption into the bloodstream, the phytosome preparation achieves better incorporation of this liver-protective flavonoid into liver cell membranes.* A study showed evidence of direct delivery into the hepatocytes (liver cells).*

Recent analyses have revealed that some milk thistle raw materials are depleted of their active components. However, Indena’s Siliphos is standardized for its silybin content. In addition, Thorne tests every lot of finished product to assure it contains the proper amount of silybin.
