Butterbur Improves Seasonal Allergy Symptoms

A botanical extract that has been extensively studied for its benefits in preventing migraines is proving to be effective against allergies. A standardized extract of the butterbur plant (Petasites hybridus) was recently shown to be as effective as Allegra® (fexofenadine) in the treatment of seasonal allergies. In a study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, researchers found butterbur and fexofenadine were equal in symptom improvement, which was statistically significant, compared to placebo. Butterbur had fewer side effects, especially drowsiness, which was more common with Allegra treatment. A previous study noted similar efficacy of butterbur, compared to Zyrtec® (cetirizine), with fewer side effects.

It is unknown how butterbur might improve allergy symptoms, but it is thought that chemicals in butterbur extract, called petasines, can reduce the production of inflammation-promoting leukotrienes.
