comprehensive multiple vitamin mineral with additional support for geriatric dogs
Older dogs have an increased need for nutritional supplementation. As aging progresses there are a greater number of degenerating tissues. This formula provides additional antioxidants and higher amounts of vitamins and minerals to support healthy tissues and tissue repair. Addition of specific amino acids can help geriatric patients by enhancing production of neurotransmitters. Tyrosine produces the catecholamines dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. DL-phenylalanine has been shown to block enkephalinase, increasing the levels of endorphins and enkephalins in the central nervous system.
The canine aging process adversely affects the brain with a decreased production of neurotransmitters, decreased synaptic density, and degeneration of neuronal membrane integrity. Phosphatidylserine positively affects neuronal membranes through support of the lipid membrane components and improves the amount and function of acetylcholine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. Acetyl L-carnitine results in increases in the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Bilberry has been added for its beneficial effects on vision. Because aging animals are more susceptible to the detrimental effects of stress, the adrenal adaptogenic herbs Eleutherococcus and ashwagandha have been added to help modulate the effects of stress.
Note: Geriatric patients may have a variety of problems that are relatively specific to the individual. In most situations, this formula can easily be combined with other formulas, such as Hepagen-C, Arthroplex, Gastriplex, or Memoractiv.
