Sedaplus (SF770) is temporarily discontinued. We have been unable to identify a source of valerian that passes our stringent product specifications for purity. We will be introducing a reformulated product in the future. In the meantime, we have several other products that can help with sleep and relaxation including Melaton-3, PharmaGABA-250, and Relora Plus.
sedative-like herbs for restful sleep*
Anyone who has pulled an all-night study session, or stayed up until the wee hours working on a project with a next-morning deadline, or driven long distances, knows the longer you go without sleep, the worse your ability to perform becomes, both mentally and physically. As with the need for food and water, humans need sleep. We spend one-third of our lives in a state of relative unconsciousness, but no one has figured out exactly why we need to sleep. Some sleep experts believe that while we sleep the brain is busy compiling what we learned during the day, creating new synapses. Other experts believe the brain spends its down-time recharging and relating to what we have learned during the day, making the new synapses created during waking hours more efficient. Either way, when it is difficult to get to sleep or stay asleep it can wreak havoc on our bodies and minds. So-called sleep debt is unhealthy; in fact, it is a risk factor for the good health of numerous systems in our bodies.
Supplementation with botanicals like valerian, rhodiola, passion flower, and others; relaxants like GABA and the sleep-inducing melatonin; and the use of neurotransmitter precursors to melatonin like L-tryptophan and 5-HTP, can be helpful in retraining the nervous system to produce restful and restorative sleep.*
Alone and in combination with hops (Humulus lupulus), valerian (Valeriana officinalis) promotes the ability to initiate sleep and enhance sleep quality.* Valerian stimulates GABA (a brain chemical that causes relaxation) release, which acts in combination with valerian's regulatory effect on the nervous system to cause relaxation.*
Hops and chamomile (Matricaria recutita) are indicated for promoting restful, restorative sleep and are also helpful for stress-related gastrointestinal upset.* Chamomile has been shown to reduce levels of ACTH, a hormone formed in the pituitary gland that stimulates the adrenal gland to secrete its hormones.* Chamomile also appears to increase the effects of GABA.* A similar calming effect is also attributed to passion flower (Passiflora incarnata), which is indicated for general nervous agitation, including inability to sleep due to an overactive mind.*
The restorative sleep attributes of Sedaplus are further strengthened by the central nervous system adaptogen Rhodiola rosea, which decreases physiological responses to stress and slows down the overactive mind for a restful sleep.*
